The Art of Symbolism
The Starry Night
A village asleep under a sky that swirls with stars, a crescent moon and the morning star. Van Gogh painted it in June 1889.
“He made the stars also.”
The window at Saint-Rémy
Van Gogh painted The Starry Night while staying at the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. The view is the one from his bedroom window before sunrise; the village and church spire were added from imagination.
Where it is
The Museum of Modern Art in New York has held it since 1941. Our tee carries the sky on the front and the painter himself on the back.
