The Art of Symbolism

Christus Rex

Christus Rex is Latin for "Christ the King". The title runs from the trial before Pilate to the last book of the Bible.

“Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth.”

— John 18:37

The King on the cross

Asked by Pontius Pilate whether He was a king, Jesus answered that His kingdom was not of this world. Pilate had a title written and set on the cross: "JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS" (John 19:19). Revelation gives the fuller title: "KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS" (Revelation 19:16).

The feast

In 1925 Pope Pius XI instituted the Feast of Christ the King with the encyclical Quas Primas, written against the secularism and nationalism of the age to proclaim that Christ's rule stands above every earthly power.

On our tee

Our Christus Rex tee carries the Chi Rho on the chest and Christ the King across the back.
